Congress Discussing Number Portability Delay

At a congressional hearing yesterday on E-911 issues, Fred Upton (R-Mich) expressed concern that Wireless Local Number Portability (WLNP) requirements for wireless carriers may be slowing down E-911 implementation. An analyst said today Upton plans to introduce legislation that could require LNP deadlines to wait until after wireless E-911 network issues are settled. WLNP would let mobile phone users keep their phone number when switching carriers. The FCC is currently requiring carriers to implement WLNP by November, although the deadline has been pushed back several times before.

AT&T, Verizon Postpone C-Band 5G Launch by Another Two Weeks

After initially rejecting the FAA's last-minute request to delay the launch of 5G in the C Band, the two carriers have now agreed to another two-week delay, following an earlier one-month delay. The services will now launch in mid-January.

T-Mobile and SpaceX today announced a partnership to provide 100% coverage across the US and "vast" parts of oceans using SpaceX's next generation of Starlink satellites, which will be able to connect directly to existing cell phones. The service will use a dedicated "small slice" of the PCS band (the G block of band 25, which is 1910–1915 MHz for uplink and 1990–1995 MHz for downlink).
