Pantech & Curitel Tweaks U.S. Strategy, Lands Contract

Pantech & Curitel yesterday announced a one-year contract to export a record 10 million phones, worth $1.6 billion, to UTStarcom Personal Communications (formerly Audiovox Communications). Previously, Curitel sold phones in the U.S. market under the Audiovox brand. Now future Curitel phones will be sold under the Pantech brand in the U.S. The new phones, 35% of which are planned to be high-end models, will be distributed to 12 carriers in North America, including Verizon and Sprint. The company also plans to sell an additional 2 million phones directly in the U.S. through subsidiary P&C Communications. (corrected 12/23)
