ETSI Standardizes New, Smaller SIM Card Design

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) today announced that it has standardized a new SIM card format for mobile devices. The fourth form factor (4FF) card will be 40% smaller than today's smallest SIM card, and can be sold in such a way that it will be backwards compatible with existing SIM cards and devices. The new 4FF design will offer all the same features as current SIM cards. Apple had submitted a design for the 4FF SIM card, which sparked opposition from Motorola, Nokia, and RIM. The companies have been going back and forth with ETSI since early this year regarding the design. The new design measures 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm thick.
