Google today announced that it has acquired Quickoffice, the maker of productivity software for smartphones and tablets. Quickoffice's software works with files such as Microsoft's Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It allows device owners to create and edit those documents on their device while maintaining compatibility with the full desktop versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. According to Google, it will use the Quickoffice team to help improve its interoperability with popular file formats, and to bring Quickoffice's technology to its Apps product suite. Quickoffice said that due to the acquisition, it will shut down Connect by Quickoffice effective July 15, 2012. All paid Connect users will receive a full-refund within 30 days. All users will have an opportunity to migrate their data to Google Drive or other provider before Connect by Quickoffice shuts down. Terms of the acquisition were not immediately revealed.
