InterDigital today announced that Intel has agreed to purchase approximately 1,700 of its patents for $375 million. The patents in question pertain to 3G, LTE, and 802.11 technologies. Intel has been looking to enter the mobile business in a meaningful way, and earlier this year brought to market its first smartphone processors. These wireless networking patents bolster Intel's own intellectual property holdings and will help it to develop better mobile chips. The companies expect the transaction to be completed in third quarter 2012, pending regulatory approval. InterDigital attempted to sell itself off in 2011, but early this year decided to leverage it IP portfolio to generate income.
