Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA today announced their intent to swap AWS spectrum to better complement the companies' 4G LTE network plans. The companies will swap assets in 218 markets spread across the country, which they say will lead to better LTE coverage for both T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. Some of the spectrum that Verizon plans to swap to T-Mobile USA is spectrum that it hopes to acquire from SpectrumCo. Verizon is awaiting federal approval to snag 122 AWS spectrum licenses from a consortium of cable companies. The deal with T-Mobile also include spectrum that Verizon has yet to acquire from Leap Wireless. According to the terms of the agreement, Verizon is giving more spectrum to T-Mobile than it is receiving from T-Mobile, so T-Mobile USA will also contribute a cash payment of unspecified value to Verizon Wireless. Prior to this announcement, T-Mobile has vocally opposed Verizon's proposed acquisition of 122 AWS spectrum licenses from SpectrumCo. According to T-Mobile, the spectrum swap will improve its spectrum position in 15 of the top 25 markets in the U.S. It will gain spectrum covering 60 million people in a range of markets, including Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Detroit, Minneapolis, Seattle, Cleveland, Columbus, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro, Memphis, and Rochester. The spectrum swap will need to be approved by federal regulators.
