Qualcomm this week announced 4GV (Fourth-Generation Vocoder,) a new codec for compressing and transmitting voice over CDMA networks. The flexible protocol can be deployed over 1xRTT networks, or 1xEV-DO networks using VoIP technology. 4GV is up to 40% more efficient than the current EVRC codec. Carriers will have the option of using the added efficiency to improve either network capacity or voice quality. Technology trials of 4GV are expected in the second half of 2005, with commercialization as early as 2006.
