Sprint today announced a new program that will let certain MVNO customers accept and activate old Sprint-branded phones. The program is being put into place to further reduce the number of cell phones that are thrown away each year. MVNOs that use Sprint's network - including Ting and Republic Wireless - will be able to allow their own customers to dig up an old Sprint device, bring it to the MVNO, and activate it for use with the MVNO. Sprint believes the program is a win-win for MVNOs, which won't have to subsidize the devices, and consumers, who won't have to buy new equipment. The Bring Your Own Sprint Device (BYOSD) program is available to Sprint's MVNO customers beginning today. (Virgin and Boost are prepaid brands owned by Sprint, not MVNOs. Therefore Boost and Virgin customers are not eligible for this program.)
