Nokia today announced the 770 Internet Tablet. Designed for accessing the internet on the go, the 770 features a 4" 800x480 touchscreen LCD, and has built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to get online. The device runs Nokia Internet Tablet OS, which is based on Debian Linux and which Nokia has open-sourced back to the Linux community as the "maemo" project. The version included in the initial release includes handwriting recognition, the Opera web browser, email, music (both streaming and local playback), and RSS. The 770 features an upgradeable OS, so as future versions are released, features such as IM and VoIP will be added. The 770 will come with 64 MB RAM and an RS-MMC slot for storage. It is expected to sell for about $350 when launched in the US.

Phone? Since when is this a phone? The closest it may get to a "phone" is when/if it supports VoIP. It can USE a phone via bluetooth, for example.

GPRS or EDGE??

Where's the EDGE connection?
Its not a phone or meant to be one at all so no type of cellular network is supported its like a tablet pc just for internet use or a pda.

I would buy one even if it only had WiFi/Bluetooth.

I need something like this right now. Instead of carrying a laptop around, I can have a small handheld unit which main purpose is for internet access. As long as the browser is decent I would buy a couple of these immediately at the price suggested.

It would certainly be a plus if it can be configured to use a GPRS connection via bluetooth, or if it can have a SIM card or Air Card of some sort put into it.
Sony has a device with wireless internet capabilities that's pretty similar.

I think that for people who have to be 'connected' all the time to the internet that this will be really usefull for. Really neat.
I think it's cool, but what else can it do? besides the net...

what a waste

what a waste of a good device.. it only supports wifi and bluetooth. if they would have put edge on this they would have somethnig worth buying.
it's not meant to be tied to a network
...
by connecting over wi-fi or bluetooth (and a mobile phone), nokia has actually extended the usable life of the 770. imagine it had, EDGE and came out this summer. then, when cingular launched hsdpa about 6 months later, the 770 would be stuck with a s...

where will you be able to buy it?

so is this something you can get at a cell phone dealer(cingular store) or is this something you get at office max or staples?
Nobody knows where yet, but considering the device doesn't support a mobile network (data or voice) I would assume no carrier will carry this device, I guess you might be able to purchase it at a office store (best buy, etc.)

Availability.

Anyone have an idea of how much money it would cost and where you would buy this device?
it is supposed to sell for about $350, and will be sold here in the states, but we don't know when yet.
