Cingular May Launch 3G In Fewer Cities

Deutsche Bank analysts believe that Cingular may only launch their 3G network in 12-15 cities. After speaking with equipment and handset suppliers, the bank's research team concluded that the carrier would scale back its initial rollout. However they do not feel this is the result of equipment shortages, but of time constraints. The analysts believe Cingular is already too busy merging with AT&T's network and upgrading to EDGE to devote enough resources to a larger 3G rollout. A Cingular spokesman has responded by saying the carrier is still on track to launch 3G in 15-20 cities, as planned. Several recent news reports show HSDPA equipment tests and handset manufacturing are both progressing as expected.
