Alcatel to Slice 10,000 Employees

Alcatel today announced that it plans to reduce its headcount by about 10,000 employees in a global restructuring of its business. The company will cut 4,100 employees across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, 3,800 in Asia Pacific, and 2,100 in North and South America. Alcatel hopes the to complete the cuts by 2015 and eventually realize cost savings of $1.36 billion. Alcatel's ranks number about 72,000 today. The company, which makes telecommunications equipment, has posted five straight quarters of losses as it struggles to compete with Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia.
