Twitter today said CEO Dick Costolo plans to step down effective July 1. No reason was given for Costolo's departure. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey will serve as interim CEO as the company searches for a new chief executive. Moreover, Twitter also announced a change to how it handles direct messages. Beginning in July, Twitter will remove the 140-character limit on private messages between two people. The limit will remain in place for standard tweets. Twitter didn't explain the reasoning behind the change for direct messages, though it has made other significant alterations to how DMs behave, such as allowing most users to DM one another regardless of who follows whom.
