FCC Officially Approves AT&T/DirecTV Acquisition

The FCC today gave formal approval to AT&T's proposed acquisition of satellite TV provider DirecTV. The FCC believes that as long as AT&T adheres to the conditions of the deal, it will serve the broader public interest. Specifically, AT&T will be required to expand its deployment of fiber-optic broadband service to 12.5 million customer locations, as well as to eligible schools and libraries. Further, AT&T will be prohibited from using discriminatory practices to disadvantage online video distribution services. Last, it will be required to offer broadband services to low-income consumers at discounted rates. The merger improves the reach of AT&T's cable television business. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler had floated a draft approval of the acquisition earlier this week. Today's decision, following a vote of the remaining commissioners, makes it final.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel gave a speech at the MWC trade show in Barcelona today where she announced that the FCC will start Auction 108 for 2.5 GHz mid-band spectrum in July of this year. This is the same band 41 that T-Mobile currently uses.

Verizon Accelerates C-Band 5G Deployment

At a presentation for investors today, Verizon announced an accelerated timeline for deploying mid-band (C-band) 5G across the US. The company now plans for its mid-band 5G network to cover 175 million people by the end of 2022, a full year earlier than the company previously planned to reach that milestone.

T-Mobile Teams with SpaceX for Satellite Coverage Using Existing Phones

T-Mobile and SpaceX today announced a partnership to provide 100% coverage across the US and "vast" parts of oceans using SpaceX's next generation of Starlink satellites, which will be able to connect directly to existing cell phones. The service will use a dedicated "small slice" of the PCS band (the G block of band 25, which is 1910–1915 MHz for uplink and 1990–1995 MHz for downlink).

Verizon C-Band Deployment Ahead of Schedule

Verizon has reached "its goal of reaching 175 million people covered by the end of 2022, a month ahead of schedule" in its deployment of 5G in new C-Band (mid-band) radio spectrum. Verizon is also expanding capacity in many deployed markets from 60 MHz to 100 MHz of bandwidth.

Bullitt Launches Its Own Two-Way Satellite Messaging Service

Phone maker Bullitt has teamed up with a number of partners to create its own two-way satellite messaging service. An upcoming Motorola Defy-series phone (made by Bullitt) will support the new service and launch in the US soon.
