Consumers in the US interested in Canonical's Ubuntu-based smartphones can now order them from BQ, Canonical's hardware partner. The Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition and Aquaris E5 Ubuntu Edition are available directly from BQ's web site for $189 and $220, respectively. The devices use Canonical's Ubuntu operating system, which is derived from Linux. The user interface makes use of swiping gestures from the sides of the display to call up apps and other elements. The E4.5 has been available to European buyers since February, and the E5 began shipping in June. This is the first time the handsets have been made available for purchase from the US. They support GSM/HSPA+ networks, but not LTE 4G.
