FCC Green-lights Samsung A990

updated The FCC today approved the Samsung SCH-A990, a new flagship CDMA EVDO phone destined for Verizon Wireless. The A990 is based on the SGH-Z710, Samsung's current top-end 3G phone for Europe. Like the Z710, the A990 features a twisting display, 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, microSD memory card slot, color external display, and an internal antenna. The Z710 also features an auto-focus lens and QVGA display; although the FCC documents made available today are light on details, it seems likely the A990 will inherit these features as well. Phone Scoop has confirmed that the A990 is intended for Verizon Wireless.

WOW! What an awesome piece of equipment! Finally, a great phone AND great camera in one nice package!
This phone just feels good in your hand. It is a great fit around your face when talking on the handset. The speakerphone is super loud...enough volume to be able to hear someone while driving down a freeway.
And the camera...fantastic! Of course, my daughter just bought a compact Nikon 6.0 megapixel camera and it takes awesome shots...BUT...she doesn't have a phone on it!
The A990 camera is 3.2 mp, and is wonderful, PRINTABLE quality. It even has autofocus...which will take just a little getting used to, but worth it!
Yes, the A990 is a little pricey, but have you seen what just that quality camera sells for without a phone?

Samsung A990
This IS a HOT phone, but as usual, since Verizon Wireless will be getting this phone, we all know darn-well that all the good features will either be crippled or not as featured-packed as expected!
It would be nice though to have everything on it and working!

Stereo speakers?
Anyone know (or can tell by the pictures) if the A990/Z710 has stereo speakers (like the LG VX8000/8100/8300 have)?
i saw some pictures of a review of the phone and it has 2 speakers on each side of the phone it looks like, so yes it has stereo speakers

The real issue
3.2 MP sounds great.
but the real question is, will the flip snap off every two weeks??? or will it get loose every two weeks like the old a610? i love samsung stuff in general but i'm not a fan of the swivel display.

👿 ok so i know this is probably not gonna get me anyhwhere but i figured you guys might know somthing i do not. i want this phone!!when it comes out do i half to pay full price..[i have the vx-8100 and hate it] plus i do have abouta year on my contract..a friend of my mentioned a "merits program that might help me get a deal??? any advice would be great. thanks ahead of time!!!!

The Merits program is available only in VZWs Midwest area (OH, MI, IL, etc) and is available to you based on your price plan and length of service. If you qualify, you will get a mailer.

Yeah i guess it looks farely big, but the z710 pics make it look not to bulky at all, and there pretty much the same.. I think its a great phone with all those features, especially the QVGA screen, and ofcourse 3.2 mp... i'd def dish out the extra bee...

It is better, the 8300 is basically a slimmer more affordable version of the 8100. It doesn't have a 3MP camera or the QVGA display. The A990 is a high end phone where the 8300 is probably going to fall into the upper end of the mid tier at Verizon.
gsm version is available
i just got the gsm version of the a990
which is called P850
it has the memeory slot, along with 3.2 megapixal. The korean version of this has the
5.0 megapixal, i think thats the only difference in the phone..
the picture quality is very good..
sound quality is great as well

The P850 is a different phone than the Z710. Similar form factor and features, but the Z710 and A990 are smaller and sleeker.

I think it's butt ugly nice to see a QVGA display but still look at the camera lens, NO Thanks
Lenses have to get larger to get better results with the larger megapixel rating. It's a lens similar to what SE is using. Unfortunately if it goes to vzw it'll be a lamborghini with the guts of a ford focus thanks to verizons crippling ui.
lol I didn't see that last picture I think it was added before I commented on it. At least you can cover the lens up it's still ugly tho

Bring it! Verizon Wireless is in desperate need of hot new handsets, hopefully they can get more. It's not for lack of cool CDMA pieces (just look at Korea).
