Google has spent the last few weeks pushing Google Play Services 8.4 to Android devices and today released the SDK developers need to access the new features within. Most of the benefits of Play Services 8.4 are developer facing, rather than end-user facing. For example, developers can let app users share the app via email, or discover more information about game player churn and spending habits. The new version of Play Services improve the Fused Location Provider API so it is able to determine location via cell tower with much greater accuracy. This can help apps save power when pulling in needed location data. Play Services 8.4 also adds support for Aztec bar codes, background scanning for Eddystone beacons, and text auto-complete for location names. Last, step counts and other Google Fit data will sync consistently across handsets, wearables, and third-party fitness apps / watch faces. The Play Services 8.4 SDK is available to developers from Google's Android developer portal. Most Android handsets and tablets should already be running Play Services 8.4.
