New DoCoMo Features Offer Glimpse Into Future

NTT DoCoMo today announced ten new 3G phones and with them, new features on the network. Many features DoCoMo pioneered are slowly making their way to the US, it is possible carriers may incorporate one or more of these in the future. Chaku-Moji allows users to transmit a 10 character (2-3 word) message when making a phone call, that will be displayed along with the caller ID on the receiver's screen. ToruCa extends NFC (called FeliCa in Japan) from mobile payments and ticketing to mobile guide book and coupons. Users can wave their phone at stands in front of businesses and landmarks and get information, menus, coupons an more on their screen. Finally DoCoMo will announce a music download service which offers a new feature: downloading of content overnight when the network is not congested. Nokia recently announced an application that will let S60 version 3 users to schedule overnight downloads of podcasts.

Having went to college in Orlando I can tell you that the tourism industry could really take advantage of this feature. Just imagine waving your phone at a restaurant and get directions back to your hotel, major tourist spots, etc etc.. I could give several examples, but you all get the gist of it.
