Cingular today launched 3G service in its hometown of Atlanta. This marks the seventeenth metro area for Cingular's UMTS/HSDPA service. Subscribers with 3G data cards should be able to take advantage of HSDPA downloads speeds averaging 400-700 kbps and peaking over one megabit. Cingular announced that additional 3G handsets including HSDPA phones will be available later this. The carrier also said that most of its major markets will have 3G service by the end of this year, which appears to confirm our earlier report that it will re-launch nationwide 3G in the fourth quarter.

Eighteen, not seventeen.

HSDPA is now available in eighteen major cities.

1. Atlanta, Georgia
2. Austin, Texas
3. Baltimore, Maryland
4. Boston, Massachusetts
5. Chicago, Illinois
6. Dallas, Texas
7. Gary, Indiana
8. Houston, Texas
9. Las Vegas, Nevada
10. Phoenix, Arizona
11. Portland, Oregon
12. Salt Lake City, Utah
13. San Diego, California
14. San Francisco, California
15. San Jose, California
16. Seattle, Washington
17. Tacoma, Washington
18. Washington D.C.
Is Gary a major city? They have a US Steel plant, but I wouldn't call it a major city. I suppose the same could be said for Tacoma.

UMTS & HSDPA

All of the new handsets that Cingular is going to be launching from this point forward are going to be launching with HSDPA as well as UMTS. The two new handsets that are confirmed so far, are the Samsung zx-20 and the LG CU500. These two handsets should actually be launching in Cingular's current 3G markets by the end of the 3rd quarter. 😎

I'm actually surprised that Atlanta WASN't part of the original batch of cities that Cingular launched 3G services in the beginning, considering it's Cingular's headquarters

Compared to V-Cast?

Anybody know how Cingy's 3G compares to Verizons in terms of speed and applications?
Speed should be similar.
Applications are most likely different. Vcast vs. MobiTv, etc.

The newer UMTS is both Voice and data though, and similar to GSM, should allow you to do voice and data at the same time. (I.e. I can receive SMS while I'm o...

Connections speeds are similar as of now. However, HSDPA has a lower latency than EVDO and is said to have a slightly noticeable difference in downloading and streaming to the user.

I haven't gotten to use HSDPA yet, so I'm not able to speak from p...
