After Round 18, action appears to have ceased on the large regional spectrum blocks. Verizon and T-Mobile split the bulk of the winnings, but Metro PCS and Cingular each scored at least one block, both in the West. Verizon paid the most for a regional block, offering up $1.3 billion for the largest Northeast lot. Many metro areas are still hotly contested, especially major business centers like New York, Washington DC, Chicago and San Francisco. The total of winning bids after round 18 adds up to almost $9.5 billion. Verizon, in for $2.8 billion, and T-Mobile, at $2.6 billion are top bidders, however T-Mobile currently claims 74 licenses for that money and Verizon only 4. SpectrumCo and Metro PCS are each winning over $1 billion in bids, and Cingular rounds out the top 5 at $580 milllion. While SpectrumCo, the consortium of cable operators that have partnered with Sprint, are soaring with winning bids on 63 licenses, the satellite TV providers DirecTV and Echostar, bidding together as Wireless DBS, stopped bidding in round 10 and dropped out of the auction in round 16.
