Google today said it is adding Google Assistant to Google Maps in order to make it more accurate and helpful. A new tab called For You provides information about the neighborhoods people live in or care about. It offers suggestions for activities, tools for finding restaurants, and other personalized recommendations via a new feature called Your Match. A third feature helps people plan group outings. A long press on place cards saves them to a shareable message thread where people can view places and vote on where to go. A new focus on small businesses helps people keep tabs on what their local stores are doing, what their hours are, and when sales are available. Last, Google is adding computer vision tools to Maps that taps into the camera to help people find their exact location on the map with proper orientation, and a map overlaid on the photo. Google calls this VPS, or visual positioning system. Google is also tapping into the power o Google Lens to provide information cards based what the camera sees. These features are coming to Google Maps for Android and iOS later this summer.
