Facebook to Nix Trending Stories from Site

Facebook today said it plans to remove the Trending section from its service. The original intent behind Trending was "to help people discover news topics that were popular across the Facebook community." Facebook found, however, that the service accounted for only a small percentage of clicks to news publishers. In addition to removing the section from Facebook, the social network plans to remove related products and integrations that rely on the Trends API. In the meantime, Facebook is exploring other ways to surface fresh news content. The company is testing a "breaking news" label with 80 publishers in several counties, as well as a dedicated "today" section that will highlight local content and information from official government sources. Facebook says it also plans to debut a "news video" section where it will display live coverage, daily news briefings, and other fresh video content. Trending will vanish from Facebook next week. These other tools will be filtered in once Facebook finalizes them.
