WiMax Officially a 3G Standard

The International Telecom Union (ITU) has voted to make WiMax one of the official 3G technologies for 2.5 GHz spectrum, along with LTE. Even though carriers and the public are referring to both these standards as 4G, the ITU has not yet given that designation to the technologies. The ITU approved the OFDM TDD WMAN variant of WiMax, which is the version being used by Sprint in this same spectrum. The ITU is a standards body that most countries look to for guidance about what technologies to allow to operate in various bands. WiMax is the first non-cellular technology to be approved by the organization as a 3G or 4G technology.
