Broadcasters Prepping Their Own Mobile TV Service

Television broadcasting companies have begun testing their own version of providing TV signals to mobile handsets. The association representing the broadcasters has successfully tested transmitting digital TV to mobile phones and laptops with modems in Chicago and Denver. Digital TV broadcasts are a year from commercial deployments, and the broadcasters are still mulling any business plan for providing such a service. Broadcasters could add DTV to their service offerings for a one-time cost of $100,000 to add the proper transmitter to their exiting equipment. How to monetize the mobile TV service and convince consumers to join has yet to be finalized. Any such service would compete head-to-head with Verizon's V CAST TV and AT&T's Mobile TV service, which use MediaFLO technology created by Qualcomm.

So Who's the Customer?

I assume that if it would compete with VZW and ATT, those carriers would block the service. I know the customer would like to receive free mobile TV, but if this service is competing with the #1 and #2 carriers and they're presumably blocking it, who is the customer?
Most likely it will be a program that customers will DL through verizon/ATT that will give them access to the broadcast. Either a one time fee, or some sort of monthly subscription that will be comparable to the carriers options, perhaps even the sub...

Think about that. If the networks make it free, the consumer will demand it and the carriers in turn will be forced to make it available.

Given the low cost of making this happen, I imagine the networks will rely on ad revenue and not charge a mon...

Don't they do this in the rest of the world already? (called DVB-H)

I read about how they are creating a mobile standard for ATSC (called ATSC-M/H). Basically, it could allow the local TV stations to broadcast in that format, as well as regular dig...

Nobody wants it

In this country at least, nobody wants Mobile TV and nobody is willing to pay for it.

Maybe if it was free.
