During the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, Nuance Communications today announced an enhanced version of their Nuance T9 Write handwriting recognition technology for touchscreen and pen-based devices with multi-touch. Like the Nuance XT9 technology on which it's based, Nuance T9 Write uses predictive input and adds handwriting recognition to offer an alternative to onscreen keyboards. In addition to basic handwriting recognition, the new software will support multi-touch gestures and user-generated shortcuts. So, a user can swipe one finger to delete a letter, two fingers to delete a whole word, or more fingers to erase an entire message. Users can also create shortcuts for commonly used abbreviations, e-mail addresses and other words and phrases. Nuance also offers the ability to customize these multi-touch gesture controls and shortcuts.
