While some manufacturers are working to make their phones more green, Gemalto is taking aim at the little SIM cards that fit inside GSM devices. At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the company announced a trial with the largest French operator, SFR, to begin swapping out older SIM cards with new SIMs made from plant-based bioplastics. The new cards are easily recyclable and can be incinerated without toxic fumes. The cards will even ship in packaging made from recycled paper and plant-based inks. SFR will begin replacing existing SIMs with the new bio-sourced cards in Spring 2010.
