Today the Bluetooth Special Interest Group gave the first glimpse of the Bluetooth 4.0 specification's roadmap, and said that it expects devices to ship with Bluetooth 4.0 by the end of the year. The Bluetooth 4.0 spec is designed for lower-power devices, such as those operated by coin-cell batteries (rather than AAA or rechargeable lithium-ion). The Bluetooth SIG expects 4.0 to show up not only in headsets, phones and PCs, but other devices such as watches, pedometers, and smart meters. The spec includes the high-speed Bluetooth-to-WiFi capabilities of Bluetooth 3.0+HS, but also includes a low power element for short bursts of data over short ranges. The Bluetooth SIG indicated, however, that the lower power capabilities won't necessarily lead to improved batter life. The first Bluetooth 3.0+HS device was certified just a short time ago. Bluetooth 3.0+HS devices are expected to filter into the market during the first half of 2010.
