LG Demos DTV-Equipped Phones

Today at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas, LG demonstrated three prototype handsets that are able to receive over-the-air digital television (DTV) signals. The three devices would allow users to watch Mobile DTV broadcasts on their handsets for free. The trial phones include a CDMA phone with twin LCD screens; a CDMA model with a 2.8-inch LCD screen and up to four hours of DTV-viewing battery life; and a GSM phone with a 3-inch LCD screen also with up to four hours of DTV time. The three handsets make uses of the LG2161R receiver chip, which is currently sampling and will move to mass production this summer. This DTV chip includes both the RF (radio frequency) tuner and the mobile DTV demodulator for reception and display of DTV signals. DTV is a competing mobile TV offering that is being provided by television broadcasters. It is an alternative to Qualcomm's MediaFLO network and FLO TV services, which also offer live TV, though users are charged to access it. The prototype handsets are a proof-of-concept to demonstrate how the technology works on mobile phones and will not be offered for sale.
