WiMAX 2 Coming Later This Year
Apr 12, 2010, 9:36 AM by Philip Berne
The WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative has issued a release with some updates on the progress of WiMAX 2, the IEEE 802.16m standard. With backers like Intel, Motorola, Samsung, Beceem and ZTE, the group hopes to have the air interface standard definition completed in the second half of 2010. The group predicts WiMAX 2 will reach peak download rates up to 300 Mbps, more than double the peak theoretical speeds of the original 802.16e WiMAX standard. The new technology will be backwards compatible with the original WiMAX networks. As part of the announcement, Mike Sievert, Chief Commercial Officer with Clearwire, the subsidiary company that holds Sprint's commercial 4G spectrum licenses, claimed that "Clear mobile customers are using an average of more than 7GB of data per month" on the Clear network.
