The Wireless Power Consortium, the industry group setting standards for wireless power and charging in consumer electronics, today announced the release of the first part of the Qi interoperability specification. Qi is a wireless standard based on magnetic induction technology, similar to the tech used in the Palm Touchstone charging device. This first step defines the interface between wireless base stations and devices, and with this piece in place, manufacturers can begin to design devices that take advantage of the Qi wireless power standard. Before products can be released with Qi-branded wireless power, the Consortium must finalize the second and third parts to the spec, which deal with performance requirements and compliance testing respectively. Wireless Power Consortium members include phone manufacturers like Nokia, RIM, Sony Ericsson and Verizon Wireless, among others.
