SafeLink Expands its Free Services to State of Maine

Today SafeLink announced that it has extended its service footprint into the state of Maine, offering some 145,000 Maine residents free cellular service. SafeLink provides low-income families with a free phone and a year's worth of service that includes 68 minutes per month and SafeLink provides eligible low-income households 68 free monthly airtime minutes, unlimited access to 911 and services such as voicemail, text, call waiting, international calling, and caller ID. SafeLink's services are paid for, in part, by taxes on cell phone bills and the Universal Service Fund. SafeLink service is provided by TracFone.

AT&T is the first US carrier to launch location-based routing of 911 emergency calls to the appropriate call centers on a nationwide basis. Previously, 911 calls were routed to call centers based on the cell tower location, and then a more precise phone location transmitted to that call center.
