iPhone 4 Will Make Video Calls

Apple today announced a video calling feature for the iPhone 4. FaceTime will use the front facing camera on the new iPhone to make 2-way video calls. Apple's FaceTime app will only work over Wi-Fi, between iPhone 4 devices, though Steve Jobs says Apple is working with carriers to provide cellular network support after 2010. Though Apple's FaceTime is proprietary, Apple is opening access to the standard so that developers can integrate the feature.

wifi usage

If you are communicating wifi to wifi, do you incur any data or phone charges? How does AT&T make money on this or does this help alleviate network use?

Seems like a fun new service. Is this going to be similar to the video chat that Skype proposed rolling out to Android phones later this year?

Exactly what I thought. Skype is the closet app I know to this.
It will be interesting to see what they keep coming up with next with that phone.

I assume no, from the start... but it would suck to only be able to voice chat evo to evo or iphone to iphone.

But it's an open standard, so Fring or Qik or whatever company decides to put a working video chat client on it is good to go.

For video calling to really, really catch on it has to be inter-device/inter-network capable.

And upload speeds have to be exceptable. And really Tmo's HSPA+ is the only one with anywhere close to good upload speeds.

It is a marginal upgrade from the 3GS, it does not compare. Putting Fring or Qik on it will not do anything, Wifi is the limitation. The fact that Sprints 3G and 4G network can handle video chat, says a lot about At&t's "fastest 3G network" claims.

no one will use it, due to the new data plans.

Gee... way to kill innovation. Its really the only thing I truly despise about the new plans.

Sorry... can't voice chat because I've already used 150mb.

It's WiFi Only for now. But I do think the new plans hamper this sort of innovation.

200mb's really is nothing!!! Even 2gb's is nothing, I'm sure there are a lot of video apps out there, CNN, local news apps, it all adds up fast, and now Netflix. These data plans amount to nothing!
