Alvarion Plans to Add LTE to Its Product Offering

Alvarion recently indicated that it will begin making time division duplexing (TDD) equipment for Long Term Evolution networks. Alvarion has to-date only supplied WiMax networking equipment and is one of the world's biggest suppliers of WiMax technology, as well as the founding member of the WiMax Forum. Alvarion's plan to make TDD-LTE equipment reflects the worldwide slowdown in investments in WiMax technology. Several WiMax network operators have gone out of business, and others — such as Sprint and Clearwire — have publicly said they are considering a switch to LTE. Alvarion's primary WiMax business is for fixed broadband DSL-replacement. It will target the same customer segments with its LTE equipment.
