In-depth review of the new Sony Ericsson W600 Walkman phone for Cingular.

The W600 doesn't just look like a swiss army knife, it acts like one too. Like the knife, the W600 offers a lot of tools in a relatively convenient package. But like the knife, the more tools that get added, the larger it becomes and the more mediocre each tool becomes. The W600 packs a lot of options into one reasonably-sized package. If you don't want to carry around an iPod or digital camera in addition to your cell phone, this phone is a good choice, but it won't replace either of those gadgets for serious use.

I'll agree with the review on the battery life, very good so far.

The camera is a good 1.3M for a camera phone, though the Nokia 6682 pictures come out a bit sharper.

And for the music portion... forget the ROKR and get the W600.

great phone

this is the best phonee out now i waited for it for a while and finally got it and it's great much better and smaller than the s710a 🙂

but the only thing i dont like about this ohone is that the camera is not as good as talked about i compared this camera with the sanyo offered by sprint and the sanyo was overwhelmingly better

Sounds like a cool phone in many ways, but based on your article the call drops are more frequent than usual, this is not acceptable in a phone. Unfortunately, you did not mention whether the vibrate feature is strong, which is a very important feature for me.

Great Review!

Nice review! I liked it. I totally agree about the camera. I have the s710 and my co worker has the w600. My phone takes much better pictures. Thats part of why I got the s710 because it was one of the few phones that had a CCD censor instead of a cmos one. One thing I was curious about tho, How did reception compare to the s710a. I have no complaints about my phone, but I just wondered if it was better or worse. My s710 gets better recption in my house than my V551 did. I can roam around my house and even go into my office without dropping the call, my 551 would drop the second I walked into the office....

this phone spins, not slides. and when it is spun open, the hinge is locked quite firmly in place. in addition, spinning the phone open or closed does not answer / hang up a call. i don't believe you're talking about this phone unles maybe you could e...

bad reception? you're kidding.

The w600, while buggy as hell, does do one thing right: signal strength. Using Cingular in socal, the w600 holds calls in places no other GSM phone i own can.

I work in a canyon area near thousand oaks where i can only get reception outdoors - and only if i'm using a phone with 800MHz GSM capabilities. But not only can the w600 make and recieve calls outdoors at my office, but it will hold onto a usable signal indoors. No other GSM phone i have tested can do this - including the razr and 6230b.

I will say, however, that the w600 is rather slow at regaining signal after it has been lost - possibly because it's quad-band.

Oh, and beware of the white screen of death (screen goes white - phone never works again). It's already happened ...

Voice Recorder and iSync Questions

How much voice recording can you do with the W600? Will it replace a pocket recorder and take up to an hour of audio notes like the Nokia 6230i? Can you configure a button so that recordings can be made with a single step or a press of that button?

Also, can you sync the phone and all multi-media (including voice recordings) with a Mac?

isync only syncs contacts and appointments, it does not sync all your media with the press of a single button. this is because it uses the syncml standard (which is common for most phones) and syncml can only sync vcard / vcal. however you can send al...

when the s710a launched, wasn't it a $500 phone? and at launch isn't the W600 a $300 phone? if my memory serves me correctly (i know, now i sound like the chairman from iron chef) than that's a pretty significant reduction in price.
