Augmented Reality Browser Gains Better Location Powers

Skyhook today announced that the Layar augmented reality browser will use Skyhook's Core Engine to improve location capabilities. The Layar reality browser superimposes a real-time digital rendering of certain types of information over the images being captured by an Android device's camera. It can be used to place nearly any type of content onto a mapped version of reality. By integrating Skyhook's Core Engine into the Layar browser, it can better render location and deliver accurate information to the augmented reality application. The Layar Browser is available for download from the Android Market. Skyhook also announced the availability of its software developer kit for developers.

Layar...

All I've ever seen it do is superimpose a few badly drawn images that flicker on and off at random. Nothing like the augmented reality apps iPhone has available.

Hate to say iPhone actually has something up on the Androids, but right now it's leading in augmented reality apps.
