Nokia today introduced new versions of its software developer tools for the Symbian and Series 40 platforms. The biggest changes for Symbian are a new Qt SDK. The new SDK for Qt offers a number of improvements for developers, including a 70% reduction in the amount of code required to write applications for Symbian devices. Qt is already pre-installed on all Symbian devices. Nokia also said that it has removed the lengthy and costly app signing process. Now, developers can sign their applications for free and with one click. Both of these should drastically reduce the time it takes to develop and publish applications for Symbian devices. Nokia is also making some changes to the Ovi Store. Starting in October, users will be able to "try before they buy" applications, and the Ovi Store now supports better carrier billing and in-app purchases. Last, Nokia is introducing the new SDK for Series 40 Touch and Type. Nokia says that this new SDK is the first touch SDK for mobile phones. It allows developers to develop within a touch user interface, which could help simplify the development process. The SDK for Series 40 is a free download, and can easily port standard Series 40 applications in for modification.
