Google today rolled out a new version of Gmail for the Android platform. Before today, new features were not available to the Android Gmail application without a full system update. This marks the first time a major application within the Android platform can be updated independently from the rest of the operating system. According to Google, it has several new features. First, the action bar will float in the screen as you read long messages, meaning you can reply to or forward messages without scrolling back to the top. Google says it is also providing one-tap access to previous messages in email threads. Last, Gmail for Android how offers limited support for its Priority Inbox feature. Google notes that in order to use this new version of Gmail for Android, users will need a device running Android 2.2. It is a free download from the Android market.

android email sucks.
This is just one of the many applications this applies to for the Android OS.
What about Google maps?
But I am really excited for this in either case. the more programs that are apps in the market instead of core part of the OS, the faster updates get pushed to the masses.
