Visa Piloting Mobile Payments on NYC Mass Transit

Visa recently announced a new pilot program taking place in New York City that allows travelers to use their phone to pay for train, subway and bus fares. In NYC, the pilot makes use of Visa's payWave technology. Interested travelers will need to obtain a microSD card that has a built-in wireless chip for interacting with Visa's payWave payment terminals. The microSD card is made by DeviceFidelity and needs to be registered to a Visa cardholder's account. Travelers can also tether the microSD card payment device to Visa's QuickPay flexible spending accounts. To start, the trial is taking place at 28 stops along the Lexington Avenue subway line (4/5/6 trains) in Manhattan, NJ Transit PATH trains, and on select MTA buses. Travelers will also be able to use the payWave system in 10,000 NYC taxis.

Yeah...

Let's just buy a monopolized microsd card. I would guess it should be a similar price to others but I somehow doubt it. Visa would've been better off just letting that tech out freely and encouraging all companies to just incorporate it in their micro sd lines. More widespread adoption while also keeping the prices low instead of letting one manufacturer choose the price point.
I'm more concerned whether they can draw on yoru account without you knowing about it like they do with SpeedPass. ☹️
