Research In Motion announced a new set of developer tools that will allow them to create web-based applications for BlackBerry devices. The new WebWorks application for developers makes use of standardized web tools, such as HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. It also offers developers the APIs they need to reach into core BlackBerry functions, such as location data. It offers multi-tasking and push notifications that integrate with both the web and the BlackBerry handset. Some of the examples cited by RIM note how BlackBerry users will be able to send text messages from within a third-party application, read call log data from within a third-party application, and play/pause audio files from third-party applications. RIM believes the new developer tools and push to support HTML5 and other web standards will lead to a richer ecosystem of applications for the BlackBerry platform. This set of tools should result in a larger, richer set of applications for BlackBerry users, as well as make it easier for developers to publish their applications. In conjunction with the web app platform, RIM also announced its own mobile advertising service, akin to Apple's iAds. It interfaces with a number of advertising networks, and allows developers to more specifically target the BlackBerry platform. Developers will also be able to add in-app payments for their applications, which means users can make in-app purchases.
