Samsung Intros Homemade NFC Chip
Nov 30, 2010, 10:07 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Samsung today announced a new near-field communication (NFC) chip for mobile handsets. Samsung says the new chip uses 20 percent less power than competing chips, and the chip can remain active and/or alert without drawing power from the battery. Samsung notes that its chip is the first to integrate embedded flash memory, which Samsung says can be used to upgrade the NFC chip's functionality. Along with the NFC chip, Samsung is providing developers and handset designers with the software protocols and suggested antenna designs to maximize the chip's performance. Samsung's NFC chip is expected to reach mass production by the first quarter of 2011. NFC chips will allow devices such as mobile phones to make instant, contactless payments at properly equipped retail locations.
