RIM has filed suit in Canada's Federal Court in Toronto over claims of patent infringement by Kik, a developer company that makes a messaging service similar in features to the BlackBerry Messenger service that is a hallmark of RIM's BlackBerry platform. The lawsuit was filed on November 30. Kik is available for multiple platforms, including Android, iOS devices and BlackBerry phones. Kik has responded in a press release, saying the lawsuit is "unjustified and disappointing." The Kik software was already excluded from the BlackBerry App World, and though it is still available for download directly from the company, Kik founder Ted Livington claimed on the company's official site that RIM had shut down "push" access for Kik's software, which means messages may take up to an hour or more to reach BlackBerry users.
