Oberthur Technologies and STMicroelectronics today announced that they have created a SIM card that includes near-field communications capabilities. The card in question uses Oberthur's Opera FlyBuy SIM technology in cooperation with STMicro's MIFARE DESFire technology. The combined SIM/NFC card would allow users of most GSM-type handsets to add NFC features. The SIM/NFC card would also make it unnecessary for handset makers to include NFC radios in their handsets. Oberthur says the SIM cards would still offer between 128Kb to 768Kb of free memory, as well as high-level security features. The companies didn't say when they expect the new SIM/NFC card to become available.
