Google today officially announced Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which includes a number of new features and changes. First, Google says that it has refined the user experience of Android 2.3, including changes to the background colors, menus, settings, and other tools. Android 2.3 includes a completely redesigned software keyboard, which has new buttons, a clearer view of the current character, and better editing/dictionary integration. The keyboard now also supports multi-touch actions, which will allow users to access secondary characters faster, and it also has an improved cut-and-paste function. Android 2.3 introduces more power management tools that customers can make use of to fine-tune battery life, as well as a new application manager and task killer. Android 2.3 adds built-in support for several new communication tools, including SIP/VoIP calling and near-field communications. Android 2.3 adds a new download manager for easier access to content (apps, files, etc.) that have been downloaded from the device's browser. Google also today made available to developers the new software developer kit for Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

An update most definitely worth having

I wonder if it will be released on current Android devices. I do hope so, but I can see Google putting it strictly on new devices. Regardless, I WANT 2.3, especially for the keyboard update. I cannot stand waiting for symbols to appear, albeit only a second - that's too long compared to any BB!
I beleive Google already announced the minimum specs for devices to run Gingerbread 2.3.

If I remember them correctly, they were:

- 1GHz or faster Processor
- 512MB RAM
- Screen Size of 3.5 inches or larger

Battery life and task killer

So with all the mixed reviews on task killers, this will come with a stock one that you should actually use?

If the EVO can get improved battery life and a suggested/android approved task killer then WOW.
Task killers are BAD.
If you have 2.1 or 2.2 then android already has a task killer built in that you can use. Go into setting-application-manage running services- and then close the apps your not using. pretty easy

The ones baked into the operating system actually shut things down at the right time, in the right way.

question is .....

Which phones will get it things just change so rapidly! My Samsung Transform has barely been out since Oct! & is supposed to be updated to 2.2 Im sure to get 2.3 they want everyone to get new phones when alot of people like me just upgraded. Kind of a joke if you ask me. Features sound good though but im sure ill have to survive until my next upgrade in a year. Watch next month there gonna be announcing 2.4 LOL
Transform is an entry level device, so don't expect many updates on it.

Android is NOT something that will hit devices equally. You buy an entry level phone, it's like getting a feature phone is. You have the software it came with.

You want an...

Cyanogenmod

So what's the big difference from what google is offering and Cyanogenmod v6.1?
You don't have to root your device for it to work.
