Verizon Wireless has signed up Oklahoma-based Pioneer Cellular to deliver long term evolution service as part of Verizon's LTE in Rural America program. The program sees Verizon leasing parts of its 700 MHz spectrum to rural carriers in areas where Verizon has not built out its LTE service already. Pioneer will build the network in its coverage area using Verizon's LTE spectrum and both Pioneer and Verizon's customers will be able to access LTE in those regions. Verizon has signed up Kentucky-based Bluegrass Cellular to the program, as well.

Now maybe

Verizon and Pioneer can't get a data roaming deal.. That part of OK is voice and text only.. ☹️
Verizon owns license to the 700 Mhz spectrum (C block I believe) that covers the ENTIRE country.

Sprint idea

Now this is one of those times I think Sprint should take a page out of Verizons playbook and do the same with there Spectrum. Especially since Sprint has 3xtimes the amount verizon does and is having funding issues for 4g expansion. Why not lease it instead of selling it off completely even though I do believe in the end it would be Verizon and Sprint benefiting the most from the underlings hard work in rural areas. 😎
Can Sprint find a carrier willing to deploy Wi-Max?

Sprint tried that with T-mobile. How did that e 😛 nd up?

Sprint's largest problem is marketing. To be perfectly frank, they suck at it.

They have a great product. Their customer service has made a complete turn around for the better. Their pr...

Good-bye Pioneer Cellular.

I don't want to partake in any negative thoughts on this but I feel Pioneer just signed their life away.

Things will be all rosy while the network is being built. But once completed, I see exuberant lease rates to the point where Pioneer will not be able to sustain a balance between paying VZW and what to charge their own subscribers.

My view is this is a sneak attack in acquiring another carrier in the future without having to worry about building out the LTE network.

While I see the benefits of the program, I feel the negatives will offset the initial intentions by a great margin.

Verizon did a similar program with Bluegrass Cellular years ago to develop their data network. Hmmmmm, Verizon still doesn't own them and they signed on to this LTE deal too. Guess it was a good deal for them.

Surely this company already has an existing 3g network in place. I am not a fan of this program, but I don't think that it is a takeover scheme.

AT&T should do this...

maybe if AT&T did this people wouldn't be using GPRS when travelling or live in the boonies where Verizon/Sprint have 3G services.
