Hands-On: HTC Wildfire S

HTC's Wildfire S is its entry-level Android device and steps down the specs and materials a bit to help lower the price point.

The Wildfire really steps down the specs, but its hard to tell without looking at the data sheet. The screen is smaller, the processor is slower, and the display has feer pixels, but it's all good.

The smaller footprint of the Wildfire will surely be appealing to some, though it is slightly thicker than the Incredible S and Desire S. It has a smooth shape and feels very comfortable to hold in your hand. I like the feel of the buttons and the way the controls are positioned. HTC has favored capacitive buttons on its Android phones of late, but they tend to work well.

The display steps from 800 x 480 down to 320 x 480, but it still looks really good thanks to the smaller footprint. It has the same brightness and color response of its larger cousins, but the lower resolution is a little bit noticeable.

Even though the Wildfire has a 600MHz processor, it worked fast and I experienced no slowdowns in using it for several minutes. It may not head to the U.S. in its current form, but HTC often customizes handsets for different markets. I can see AT&T offering this device down the line.
