Ericsson Sues ZTE Over Patents

Ericsson has filed a lawsuit against ZTE in the U.K., alleging that ZTE is violating a number of Ericsson's patents in its handsets. Ericsson is asking ZTE to stop selling the phones in the U.K. and wants monetary compensation for damages. ZTE said it also expects Ericsson to file similar claims against it in Germany and Italy. ZTE didn't name the infringing handsets, nor explain exactly what patented technologies are involve. ZTE and Ericsson both do business in the U.S., but so far no lawsuits have been filed here. Patent infringement lawsuits are common in the industry, with many of the top companies, including RIM, Apple, Nokia, HTC, Motorola, and others, involved in litigation against competitors.

However, it would be nice if the patent offices would investigate the past filings further before offering the rights to these companies. Generic patents are still patents. Yet, if there is a conflict with the clarity of what can or can't be patented, the offices should revise the standards and also advise said companies of these patent limitations.
Whatever the case(s) may be, my question is what are they going to do to cut down the "Common" occurrences in the industry. Obviously, the buck gets passed down to us consumers and I'm frankly growing tired of hearing of lawsuits for patent infringements. It shouldn't happen if the rules were mor...
