AT&T today announced that it has completed preparing its network in a handful of markets in order to transition the former Alltel customers in those regions from Alltel's services to its own. AT&T is offering the former Alltel customers a free handset comparable to their Alltel phone, and is allowing them to keep their Alltel voice/data plan with no additional term extension if they choose the free phone. Customers in these markets can of course also choose to purchase new handsets and AT&T services the same as in any other market. All the Alltel stores and service centers in these regions have been rebranded with AT&T's logo. The markets include Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. AT&T is taking over these markets due to the market divestiture agreements Verizon Wireless made when it purchased Alltel.
