Sprint Prepping Network Deals with Clearwire and LightSquared

According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, Sprint is on the cusp of forging new roaming and network access deals with Clearwire and LightSquared. The Journal reports that since the departure of Clearwire's former CEO Bill Morrow, the two companies have been able to move forward in hammering out a wholesale roaming agreement. The progress on that front has enabled the two companies to come to terms on network access, and Clearwire will gain access to Sprint's network as a result. Sprint is also prepared to allow LightSquared to access its network infrastructure in exchange for cash and use of some of LightSquared's rural spectrum assets. Sprint currently pays Verizon to roam onto its rural spectrum, so this deal could help Sprint financially, as it would be less beholden to Verizon. All three companies face challenges in competing with AT&T/T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. This series of agreements could aid in those efforts by helping all three reduce costs while expanding access.

GPS and LightSquared

Isn't there still a problem with the L-Band spectrum that LightSquared uses interfering with GPS?

Good to see...

Sprint is at least putting up some token resistance. The best thing they can do is gain as many roaming partners besides Verizon as possible. Alltel really screwed them up selling out to Verizon. Ultimately Sprint only has itself to blame for rejecting Scott Ford's offers to join up previously.
