Nokia Shares More Details About Microsoft Partnership

Nokia today posted information on how its partnership to bring Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform to its hardware and ecosystem will work. First, Nokia will supply all the mapping and location-based services for Windows Phone, using its Ovi Maps product. Nokia and Microsoft together will launch a new Nokia-branded application store, which will merge the back-end systems of the WP7 Marketplace with Nokia's operator billing agreements. In order to convince Nokia developers to switch to writing apps for WP7, the companies are waiving the $99 Windows Phone developer fee for the first year. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said that Nokia will receive billions of dollars in payments from Microsoft over the next five years. Elop noted that the company is committed to selling Symbian devices this year, including a number of dual-SIM phones, and will continue to refine the Symbian platform. Speaking about the next-generation of Nokia devices, Elop promised they will "define some of the future disruptions in our market."
