Nokia today announced that it will transfer all Symbian software development and support services — along with 3,000 employees — to Accenture. Accenture will take responsibility for Symbian development and support moving forward as Nokia transitions from Symbian to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. Nokia believes this is the best move for its Symbian properties and employees. In addition to the Symbian transfer, Nokia also announced plans to cut approximately 4,000 employees from its payroll. The layoffs, which will mostly affect Nokia's Symbian and MeeGo research and development groups, will take place in phases between now and the end of 2012. Nokia also plans to consolidate its R&D facilities and give them each a more clearly defined role. Nokia announced in February is strategic shift from Symbian to WP7, and the change will have a profound effect on Nokia's business moving forward.
