Qualcomm's Augmented Reality Platform Goes Live

Qualcomm today announced the full launch of its Augmented Reality Platform for Android. First announced in June 2010, Qualcomm's augmented reality platform and software developer kit (SDK) are meant to help developers make better augmented reality applications. Augmented reality applications superimpose computer-generated content over a live camera view on mobile phones. Many augmented reality applications rely on GPS and a compass to locate the device and provide details about nearby places. Qualcomm's augmented reality SDK is different and will rely on vision-based information, such as object and place recognition. Qualcomm says this will let developers better integrate augmented reality content with what their phone sees in the real world. The 1.0 release of the SDK and NDK are available to all developers. Augmented reality applications can be built for any device running Android 2.1 and higher, though Qualcomm says the apps will run best on devices using its SnapDragon chipsets.
